WHO WAS GEORGE BARCLAY?

George Barclay was an Aberdonian who, after winning a talent contest in Aberdeen's Palais de Dance, went on to sing with the leading names of the dance band era of the 1930's. After working at Aberdeen's Palais with the Arthur Mounsey Band and Archie Alexanders Blue Four, George moved to London and sang with Mantovani, Charlie Kunz, Bert Firman, Felix Mendelson and Billy Thorburn.

The attached profile on George Barclay by Chris Hayes goes into great detail about George's career and could be used for reference.

Of interest to Aberdeen readers could be the halcyon days of the old Palais dancehall.

Does any reader remember George Barclay, Arthur Mouncey or Archie Alexander. I'd put the dates at around 1931-33.

From the radio interview transcript we can see that vendors during the 30's used records as a means of advertising. Does any reader remember Belito Stockings (male or female!).

D.W. Reid: Aberdeen.
